SIMPLE and assessment

Assessment is possibly an area where SIMPLE is fairly unique, in that learning and assessment can take place in the same arena. In this session we gave examples of different forms of simulation, and how they were assessed. Attached is a table from a book chapter written by Karen Barton and myself showing the differences between two types of simulation -- open sims and bounded sims. The contrast is really a spectrum, and most sims will fall somewhere between these two poles. The assessment of learning within the sim will often depend on where in the spectrum the sim design lies. Bounded sims will often need assessment of learning outcomes (eg drafting court documents, etc); whereas open sims may require the whole file to be assessed according to standards of evidence (eg PI transaction).
